The Studio

Springfield's specialist plaster studio

Decorative plaster is one of the oldest wall finishes in the world and still one of the most refined. Applied by hand in thin mineral layers, it catches light differently through the day, softens a room's acoustics and ages with character rather than wear.

Springfield Plaster is a small, specialist studio based in Springfield, Missouri. Every project is applied by our own trained artisans, never subcontracted, from surface preparation to the final burnish and seal.

Venetian plaster, limewash and more in Springfield

Each finish is mixed and tinted in-house. We bring physical sample boards to your site so you choose against your own light, flooring and furnishings.

Venetian Plaster

Polished lime and marble dust with the depth of stone. Slaked lime and finely ground marble are applied in several paper-thin layers, then burnished with a steel trowel until the surface tightens into a smooth, luminous sheen that reads like polished stone.

Limewash

A soft, cloud-like mineral wash with natural movement. As it cures it calcifies and develops the soft, mottled movement that photographs so beautifully: cloudy, chalky, quietly alive.

Roman Clay

Smooth, suede-like texture with subtle tonal variation. It sits between limewash and Venetian plaster: more refined than a wash, more relaxed than a polish.

Moroccan Clay

Earthy, hand-troweled clay with velvety matte depth. Applied by hand in two coats, it dries to a soft, velvety matte surface with the kind of warmth and tonal depth that paint cannot imitate.

Questions

Decorative plaster questions, answered

Not answered here? We are happy to talk through your project, surfaces and budget before you commit to anything.

All questions

How much does decorative plaster cost?

Most decorative plaster finishes range from $17 to $55 per square foot installed, depending on the finish, number of coats, surface preparation and detailing. Venetian, metallic and tadelakt sit at the higher end; limewash and Roman clay at the lower end. Every Springfield project receives a written, itemized quote after a site visit.

What is the difference between Venetian plaster and limewash?

Venetian plaster is a lime and marble-dust plaster applied in thin layers and burnished to a smooth, polished, marble-like surface. Limewash is a thinner mineral wash that leaves a soft, matte, cloud-like finish with visible brush movement. Venetian reads as formal and luminous; limewash reads as relaxed and organic.

Can decorative plaster be applied over existing drywall or paint?

Yes. We prepare the surface with the appropriate primer or bonding coat so the plaster adheres correctly to drywall, previously painted walls, skim coat, concrete or masonry. Preparation is included in every quote.

How long does a plaster finish take to install?

A single feature wall or fireplace typically takes two to three days including drying time between coats. A full room takes four to seven days. Larger whole-home projects are scheduled in phases so you can continue living in the space.

Is decorative plaster durable and easy to maintain?

Lime-based plasters are breathable, mold resistant and harden over time. Sealed finishes can be wiped with a damp cloth. Tadelakt and microcement are waterproof and suitable for showers, bathrooms and kitchens.
